More About this Test

This test analyses the genetic makeup of your dog in order to establish its full breed composition. By understanding a dog’s breed composition, we can highlight which diseases they are most likely to suffer from, tell you about their unique personality traits and so much more.

Our dog DNA database is composed of over 95 breeds of dogs. If your dog contains DNA from a breed that is not in our database, the DNA represented in that part of your dog’s genetics will be assigned to the foundation breed or to the next most closely related breed or breeds.

Note

As the results are based on the dog’s entire gene pool it will not necessarily reflect the dog’s current appearance. Guessing a mixed-breed’s ancestry can be difficult even for knowledgeable dog observers, because mixed-breeds have much more genetic variation than purebreds. The presence of certain dog breeds in your results does not guarantee that the dog will look like the specific detected breeds, because the genetic contributions from the other breeds present may be more visible.

The Testing Process

Once you have ordered the test, we will promptly dispatch your canine sample collection kit. Included in the kit are mouth swabs that will be used for collection of DNA. All you need to do is gently rub the swab inside your dog’s mouth, against the inner cheek. The rubbing procedure can be done in less than a minute and is completely painless. Once samples are in the laboratory, scientists will proceed to analyse the DNA in the canine cheek cells.

The dog DNA test is carried out at an experienced genetic testing laboratory specializing in breed identification and other dog DNA tests.

Note: This test is made for mixed-breed dogs and will not determine whether your dog is purebred.

Dog DNA Testing Results

DNA test results will be sent by email within 3-4 weeks from receipt of samples. There will be a host of valuable information included in the test, including:

  • A complete breakdown of your dog’s breed composition. The test will determine what breeds your dog is made up of. The breed composition scale goes from Level 1 (75% of the DNA comes from one specific breed), down to Level 5 (9% or less). This structure helps you see exactly what breed mix your pup’s DNA is made up of.
  • A comprehensive guide to what kind of personality traits, exercise routines and behaviours you can expect from each individual breed in your dog. This information can prove to be useful to the pet owner who wants to make the most of their dog’s training, using techniques that are most suited to the temperaments and activity levels specific dog breeds.
  • Your official document showing the results with a gold stamp of approval. This document will break down the test results and is perfect for framing.
  • A step by step guide of the illnesses and health problems that could plague your particular breed mix. You can use this information to prepare for future illnesses or address problems that might already be present.

The Dog DNA Database

Experience indicates that approximately 2.3% of all DNA canine testing will yield results that are inaccurate or cannot be interpreted. The reasons for this are:

Dogs have extremely high levels of oral bacteria which may result in degeneration of the sample before our DNA extraction process commences.

Another important factor is that our dog DNA database is composed of over 95 breeds of dogs. These 95 breeds are the most common breeds of dogs we find in mixed breed dogs across North America. You need to bear in mind that there will be some dog breeds that may not be represented in our database. If your dog contains DNA from a breed that is not in our database, the DNA represented in that part of your dog’s genetics will be assigned to the foundation breed or to the next most closely related breed or breeds.
